Cindy Lopez of Green Bay has been named Northeast Wisconsin Technical College’s 2009 District Ambassador. She is a student in the Nursing-Associate Degree program.

Lopez delivered the student address during the NWTC Green Bay commencement May 20, at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon.

“I feel so thankful for everything that NWTC has done for me,” Lopez said. “I am the first in my family to attend college; this is something that I and my parents and daughters are very proud of. I enrolled in technical college with hope of getting a better paying hourly job, but I will leave NWTC with a new life, far better than I had ever dreamed of.”

Lopez, a single, working mother of two daughters, enrolled at NWTC in 2005 with the goal of getting her General Educational Development Certificate (GED®). Successful in that pursuit, Lopez was encouraged by her instructors to continue her education. She is now on track to graduate from the Nursing-Associate Degree program in December 2009.

As NWTC District Ambassador, Lopez is eligible to act as a representative of the NWTC District and as a Wisconsin Technical College System State Ambassador, promoting technical college education among professional organizations, civic groups, state and local officials, businesses and industries.

Lopez currently volunteers in the General Studies office at NWTC – talking to students who are working on their GEDs about continuing their education.

“I share my experience as a student, single mom, and full-time employee,” Lopez said. “I hope to inspire students to see the possibility of a better life.”
