Satisfactory Academic Progress

Satisfactory Academic Progress Procedures

If you receive financial aid, government regulations require that you make satisfactory progress and maintain good standing in your courses. Students who do not meet these criteria cannot continue receiving Financial Aid until they meet the reinstatement criteria.

To be eligible for financial aid

  1. Each semester: The student must receive passing grades (A, B, C, or D) in at least 70% of credits attempted during the semester AND a minimum of 2.0 semester grade point average (GPA). "W" and "IP" grades are not considered completed and will count against your attempted credit calculation.
  2. Overall: The student must complete their program within 150% of the published full-time program time in order to remain eligible for funding.

Credits received for Prior Learning (such as Credit by Work Experience), Credit by Exam, Transfer of Credit, and Audit do not count for financial aid purposes.

In order for remedial classes to count for financial aid purposes, they must appear on the state listing of approved classes.

Students whose grades do not meet the requirements

Students who fail to meet the criteria listed on No. 1 will be given one semester of probation (or "grace"). The student may still receive financial aid during their probation semester.

If the student again fails to meet the criteria during their semester of probation, the student must complete one semester of at least six credits successfully without financial aid. Successful completion means completing at least 70% of attempted credits and earning a 2.0 semester grade point average.

  • Example 1

Semester 1     1.7 GPA (Grace for Semester 2)
Semester 2     2.25 GPA (Meet Criteria, Returned to Eligibility)

  • Example 2

Semester 1     1.7 GPA (Grace for Semester 2)
Semester 2     1.8 GPA (Failed to Meet Criteria, Unsatisfactory Progress)
                      Semester 3     No Financial Aid

If you have extenuating circumstances

If non-academic circumstances affected your academic progress, you may be eligible to appeal for reinstatement of your financial aid. Contact the Financial Aid Office for the appeal form. Students may appeal their financial aid ineligible status only once.
