Course Description

20-801-212 ETHNIC LITERATURE ...explores questions of identity within various cultural contexts. Writers represent one or more ethnic groups working in one or more genres of literature with emphasis on developments in voice, genre, and style over chronological periods and geographical zones. Individual sections may vary in particular emphasis. (Prerequisite: 10-801-136, English Composition I OR 10-801-195, Written Communication with “C” or better)

What will I learn?

  1. Explain the major cultural, historical, and political contexts that have shaped ethnic texts.
  2. Explore issues of identity, race, gender, ethnicity, and nationality as they intersect with ethnic texts.
  3. Explore major rhetorical and literary movements that have influenced various multicultural authors.
  4. Analyze language, imaginative voice, and literary strategies in ethnic texts.
  5. Analyze authorial relationships with different audiences, both inside and outside the author’s cultural group.
  6. Explore the concept of privilege as depicted in texts.
  7. Examine cultural and political issues involved in literary canon formation.
