10-544-207 GERO: LEGAL & ETHICAL ISSUES OF AGING ...covers concepts and structures involved in the legal and ethical realm of gerontology including Power of Attorney for health care/finance, guardianships, trusts, reallocation of assets, spending down, Medicare/Medicaid benefits, supplemental insurance, Social Security, elder abuse/neglect, financial exploitation, reporting abuse/neglect and relevant governmental policy. Learners will be able to apply knowledge by learning advocacy techniques to benefit senior populations on a community, local, and federal level. (Prerequisite: 10-544-204, Social Gerontology)

What will I learn?

  1. Differentiate between Power of Attorney for Health Care, Power of Attorney for Finance, and Guardianship
  2. Analyze governmental policy development surrounding the older adult population
  3. Summarize the role of Social Security
  4. Contrast the services provided to the older adult by Medicare and Medicaid
  5. Compare trust plans, reallocation of assets, and spending down
  6. Characterize financial exploitation in the aging population
  7. Identify signs and signals of elder abuse and elder neglect
  8. Defend the need for and importance of advocacy around aging
  9. Analyze the ethical dimensions embedded within aging issues
