Course Description

10-863-307 IEP ADVANCED READING/WRITING 2 …students will read articles and academic essays, identifying main ideas and details, increasing reading fluency, developing inferencing skills, and discussing readings in groups. Students will also critically examine articles to produce academic essays, utilizing the writing process to refine their writing. (Prerequisite: Completed 10-863-306, IEP Adv Reading/Writing 1 with grade of "C" or better, OR instructor approval; Corequisite: 10-863-305, IEP Adv Listening/Speaking 2)

What will I learn?

  1. Recognize and produce both low frequency and high frequency vocabulary LP2, LP4, LP6
  2. Analyze the structure of different text types LP5
  3. Use reading strategies to increase comprehension of academic texts L3, LP5
  4. Apply critical thinking skills to both short articles and extensive texts (short stories) LP4
  5. Recognize and produce both high-frequency and academic-level vocabulary LP2, LP4, LP6
  6. Analyze academic-level readings LP7
  7. Construct clear, coherent multi-paragraph essays LP6
  8. Use intermediate-level grammar in everyday, informal spoken discourse LP1-8
  9. Demonstrate control of noun phrases and pronouns in spoken and written informal academic discourse LP3
  10. Demonstrate control of question formation LP2
  11. Demonstrate control of comparisons LP6
  12. Demonstrate control of modals and related multi-word expressions in informal and academic discourse LP7
