Law Enforcement Academy - Technical Diploma
Students learn the skills of modern-day law enforcement in this full-time program designed to produce thoroughly competent and confident officers. Graduates of this program begin their careers with an unparalleled level of professionalism through a learner-centered approach via application of scenario-based training. This 720-hour program is designed for individuals with 40 college credits at an associate degree level or higher, or current employment with a sponsoring law enforcement agency. This program meets criteria set by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Training and Standards Bureau.

Requirements for Program Entry
- Apply at www.nwtc.edu/apply
- An official high school transcript, or equivalent, showing proof of graduation. (For a list of equivalents, go to www.nwtc.edu/gettingstarted.) If your cumulative GPA is below 2.6, complete or submit a placement evaluation.
- 40 college credits at an associate's degree level or higher, or current employment with a sponsoring law enforcement agency as a law enforcement officer.
- Student packet (packets are emailed every Thursday) which includes forms and requirements as designated by the Department of Justice. Includes background check and fingerprinting at the student's expense.
- Valid driver’s license and eligible to drive college vehicles under the college’s insurance carrier.
- Students who apply to this program must be a United States citizen in accordance with the Department of Justice.
- Successful completion of the DOJ Physical Readiness Test completed within 180 days of the Academy start date. NWTC does host this test on a limited basis. Students must also pass another DOJ Physical Readiness test at the completion of the program to obtain their certifiability status. A list of fitness test events and minimum passing scores for the pre and post test can be found via the Physical Readiness Testing link on the right side of this page.

Course Descriptions
Through classroom lecture and WI Department of Justice 720 Academy integration exercises, students will learn and apply skills addressed in the following WI Department of Justice 720 Academy Phase I curriculum framework topics: Academy Orientation, Fundamentals of Criminal Justice, Ethics, Cultural Competency, Agency Policy, and Professional Communication.
Course Typically Offered: Summer SpringThrough classroom lecture, and on-campus lab, and WI Department of Justice integration exercises students will learn and apply skills addressed in the following WI Department of Justice 720 Academy curriculum framework Phase I topics: Critical Thinking and Decision-Making, Basic Response (RESPOND), Radio Procedures, Introduction to TraCS, Traffic Law Enforcement, and First Aid/CPR/AED. This course will also include the WI DOJ 720 Academy Integration Exercises.

This course includes the DOJ Phase I Written Exam.

Course Typically Offered: Fall SpringThrough classroom lecture, and on-campus lab, and WI Department of Justice 720 Academy integration exercises students will learn and apply skills addressed in the following Department of Justice 720 Academy Phase II topics: Emergency Vehicle Operation and Control (EVOC) and Vehicle Contacts II.
Course Typically Offered: Fall SpringThrough classroom lecture, on-campus lab, and WI Department of Justice 720 Academy integration exercises, students will learn and apply skills addressed in the following Phase II topics of the WI Department of Justice 720 Academy curriculum framework: Constitutional Law II, Physical Evidence Collections, and Crisis Management. The Phase II Written Exam will be given in this course.

Course Typically Offered: Fall SpringThrough classroom lecture, on-campus lab and WI Department of Justice integration exercises, students will learn and apply skills addressed in the following Phase III topics from the WI Department of Justice 720 Academy curriculum framework: Traffic Law Enforcement - Core and Radar, Traffic Crash Investigations & Incident Management, Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated (OMVWI), Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFST), Hazardous Materials and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), Incident Command Systems and NIMS, and Report Writing.
Course Typically Offered: Fall SpringThrough classroom lecture, on-campus lab and WI Department of Justice 720 Academy integration exercises, students will learn and apply skills addressed in the following Department of Justice 720 Academy curriculum framework Phase III topics: Domestics, Juvenile Law, Victims, Sexual Assault, and Child Maltreatment. The DOJ Phase III Written Examination will be administered in this course.
