What is the Traffic Safety School Program?
The Traffic Safety School Program is a highway safety initiative aimed at reducing the number of traffic violations and crashes in Wisconsin. The Traffic Safety School Program is provided statewide by the Wisconsin Technical College System. The course consists of a minimum of 12 hours of interactive education. Students receive information about defensive driving strategies, risks and consequences of aggressive driving, safety belts and air bags, Wisconsin traffic laws and penalties, speeding and crash risk and impaired driving. Students have many opportunities to self-assess their driving patterns and apply strategies to reduce their risk on the road. Students complete a Personal Change Plan to help them modify their high-risk driving behaviors. Students are asked to work on three important change goals: wearing a safety belt, reducing speed and focusing attention while driving. In addition, students choose from a variety of other targeted high-risk driving behaviors to monitor and change during the course.
Who Attends Traffic Safety School?
The Traffic Safety School Program is a valuable educational intervention for any driver. Most attendees to the program have a record of high-risk driving and have accumulated points on their driving record. Students who successfully complete the Traffic Safety School Program may be eligible to receive a three-point reduction from their driving record.

Class Requirements
The attendance policy is uniform across the state and required by the Department of Transportation.
- Attendance at every class session and being in the classroom on time are mandatory. Since there are only four class sessions, if one class is missed it will result in the student starting over in a different class.
- Satisfactory completion of all classroom and assigned homework.
- Participation in the classroom activities.
- No use of alcohol or other substances prior to the class.
- Violations of the above expectations will result in unsatisfactory completion of the course.
Promoting Positive Change
The Traffic Safety School Program is built upon the premise that all individuals have the power to change behavior if they have the motivation and tools to do so. Students are assisted in applying course information to their own life circumstances and provided with guidance and support for change. The Traffic Safety School Program applies prevailing research in change and motivation to help participants alter high-risk driving behaviors. Students develop a Personal Change Plan to increase safe driving practices. Students work on their plans throughout the course, monitor their progress each week and review and adjust change goals as they exit the course. The goal is for each student to leave the course with a personalized, realistic and specific plan to avoid future high-risk driving.
