Supporting your pregnancy and education

If you are a student who is pregnant, it’s important to know you have a right to continue your education. In fact, a federal law called Title IX protects pregnant students from being discriminated against due to pregnancy or related conditions. While Title IX does not protect significant others preparing for the birth of a child, NWTC wants to make sure that you can continue with your education while you prepare for the delivery of your child. You will not receive the same modifications as a pregnant student, but additional flexibility may be provided, especially around the due date.

Someone from the Title IX team is here to assist you. With a little planning and flexibility, you can continue your education, focus on your health, and achieve your goals!

What to expect as a pregnant student under Title IX:

  • Reasonable modifications– As you move along in your pregnancy, you may need adjustments in the classroom to better fit your learning needs. Some examples may include (but are not limited to) a larger desk and break times to stand, walk, and use the restroom.
  • Excused absences – Missing class can set you behind, but sometimes it’s unavoidable, especially as you near your due date. Be sure to keep open lines of communication with your instructor during your pregnancy so they can help you get caught back up.
  • Adjusted deadlines – Instructors will work with you to develop a plan based on your due date. That might mean working ahead in your class or receiving extensions on test, exams, and assignments. Open communication with your instructor and case manager is important.
  • Pressing pause – Sometimes it may be in your best interest to take some time off from classes while you’re pregnant. Be sure to connect with your academic advisor to learn more about how your time off will affect your timeline for graduation. If you receive financial aid, it will also be important to learn more about what this may mean for your loans.

To begin planning for your pregnancy and due date, connect with our Title IX team.

  • Self-identify as a pregnant student by contacting our Title IX Team: titleixinfo@nwtc.edu or (920)498-6390 (Kelly Schumacher) or (920) 498-6932 (Dawn Rentmeester).
  • You will be connected to someone from our Title IX team who will serve as a resource throughout your pregnancy. We will collaborate with your instructors, and help you put a plan in place that works for you and your educational goals.
  • Exchange of information form.
This form is to be filled out by you and sent to the Title IX team. Your pregnancy is considered medical information. We are not able to speak with your instructors (or anyone else) without your permission. This form gives permission for us to work with you and your instructors on developing your plan.

Early conversations with your medical provider, instructors, and our team are important. Together we will put a plan in place, but sometimes the unexpected happens. We will work with your instructors and you every step of the way to help you achieve your goals!

If you believe you have been discriminated against or harassed based on your pregnancy or related conditions, please contact anyone from the Title IX team or submit an incident report.
