Frequently Asked Questions
What are High School Academies?
High School Academies allow qualified high school juniors and seniors to take college-level courses while completing high school. Students earn college credits that can apply to NWTC programs or transfer to four-year universities.
How are High School Academies different from Start College Now?
Academy students attend classes on NWTC’s Green Bay campus before noon in a cohort with other Academy students. This creates a consistent, supportive learning environment tailored just for them. Start College Now students take NWTC classes individually and in a variety of locations.
Academies meet for class during the following times:
- Transfer Academy: Monday through Thursday, 8:30–11:20 a.m.
- EMT Academy: Monday through Friday, 8:30–11:30 a.m.
Am I eligible to attend a High School Academy?
The Academy is open to high school juniors and seniors who are in good academic standing, have a positive attendance record, and demonstrate good conduct. EMT Academy students must also be at least 17 years of age on the first day of class. NWTC will work with students, families, and schools to ensure the program aligns with their goals.
How much does the Academy cost?
Costs are based on NWTC tuition rates and vary by school district. Some districts may cover part or all the tuition, while others require families to contribute. Talk to your high school counselor to confirm your district’s policy.
Where will my credits transfer?
Academy credits can be applied to NWTC programs, other technical colleges, or transferred to most four-year universities. NWTC partners with over 40 colleges to make transferring easier.

What if I’ve already taken one or more Academy classes?
That’s okay! NWTC will review your existing credits and help decide whether the Academy or another program like Start College Now is the best fit for you.
Do students return to high school for afternoon classes?
Yes, in most cases. Whether you return depends on your school district’s policies and your individual schedule. Talk to your high school counselor to plan your afternoon classes.
Can students still join high school extracurricular activities?
Absolutely! Academy classes finish by 11:30 a.m., leaving plenty of time for afternoon classes, sports, and other activities.

Submit your application by May 15 for the best chance of getting into your chosen academy and cohort.
How does the Academy calendar align with my high school schedule?
