NWTC Marinette and UW-Green Bay, Marinette Campus announce nursing track
With states like Wisconsin continuing to face a shortage in nurses to serve patients, leaders at two colleges in Northeast Wisconsin are tackling the issue with a sense of community urgency and student affordability in mind, developing an inventive new nursing education model in Marinette.
The Marinette Nursing Track is set to begin this fall which allows nursing students to obtain an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in four years. The Track is a direct result of the Marinette Area Higher Education Coalition, a partnership between NWTC Marinette and UW-Green Bay, Marinette Campus.
“This Track offers students yet another pathway into health care fields,” Marinette Campus Dean Jennifer Flatt said. “Our amazing nursing faculty will now have the opportunity to work with even more students in our area.”
Students receiving their BSN through the Marinette Nursing Track can save thousands in tuition compared to going through a traditional four-year BSN program.
Students will take classes for Year 1 at UW-Green Bay, Marinette Campus and Years 2 and 3 at NWTC Marinette (obtaining an ADN in the process). Year 4 will be through UW-Green Bay, Marinette Campus and include a combination of in-person, blended, and online courses with flexibility to meet students’ lives.
Throughout their time to degree, students will find greater flexibility in course scheduling between the two locations because of the colleges’ united approach to meeting the area’s need for nurses.
In Wisconsin according to ANEW (Administrators of Nursing Education of Wisconsin) over 27,000 nurses will be needed to fill the RN nursing gap by 2040.
“We are excited to meet the local healthcare needs and have students earn a bachelor’s degree without leaving the area,” Campus Executive Officer for UW-Green Bay, Marinette Campus, Cindy Bailey said.
