DSPS Firearms Instructor Certifications

  • Firearms Instructor Certifier Class (Handgun)
    • Duration: 36 to 40 hours
    • Overview: This extensive course provides in-depth training on handgun safety, handling, and instructional techniques.
  • Firearms Instructor Certifier Class (Rifle)
    • Duration: 24 - 36 hours
    • Overview: Focuses on rifle safety, handling, and instructional techniques, complementing the handgun instructor certification.
  • Firearms Instructor Recertification (Handgun or Rifle)
    • Duration: 16 hours 
    • Frequency: 12/31/Even years*
    • Overview: Designed for current instructors who need to renew their certification, covering updates and advanced techniques.

DSPS Firearms Permit Certifications

  • Firearms Permit Training (Handgun)
    • Duration: 36 hours
    • Overview: Comprehensive training for individuals seeking a handgun permit, covering safety, legal considerations, and practical handling.
  • Rifle Permit Training
    • Duration: 24 hours
    • Prerequisite: Must be completed after the Handgun Permit Training
    • Overview: Detailed training on rifle handling and safety for individuals seeking a rifle permit.
  • Refresher Firearms Training
    • Duration: 6 hours
    • Frequency: 12/31/Even years*
    • Overview: Ongoing training to ensure permit holders stay current with best practices and legal requirements.

 

*Per Wisconsin State Statutes 440.08 (2), the required renewal date for the Firearms Certifier credential is 12/31/even years.
 Should you receive your initial credential in the months leading up to this date, you are still required to renew your license by the statutorily defined date.
