Course Description

10-520-109 CHILD AND ADOLESCENT BEHAVIOR ...Child and Adolescent Behavior is a course examining problematic behavior issues often encountered with children and adolescents in the field of human services. This examination is conducted in three parts. An understanding the process of healthy child and adolescent development in engaged in the early stages of the course. With this understanding, the course then addresses numerous problematic environmental, situational, and neurological issues that impede healthy development; and the diagnostic results of these impediments. Finally, the course comprehensively addresses systematic, therapeutic and medicinal interventions for various diagnostic disorders. The course focuses on strength-based models and trauma-sensitive approaches, and is solution-based to prepare students for successful integration to human services professions and/or further study in the field. (Prerequisite: 10-809-188 Developmental Psychology.)

What will I learn?

  1. Examine how early childhood experiences affect later developmental processes.
  2. Distinguish between normal developmental tasks versus indicators of concern.
  3. Distinguish between the various types of abuse and neglect as defined in Chapter 48 of the Wisconsin State Statutes.
  4. Identify risk factors for youth to become involved with juvenile delinquent behaviors.
  5. Evaluate the different components of the juvenile justice system.
  6. Analyze various mental health issues affecting children and adolescents.
  7. Identify medications commonly used to treat childhood mental health issues.
  8. Identify side effects of medications commonly used to treat childhood mental health issues.
  9. Illustrate the role, rights, and requirements of the mandated reporter as defined in s 48.981 (1)(d) of the Wisconsin State Statutes.
  10. Classify basic interventions used with children and adolescents who have issues in their behavior.
