Course Description

10-802-101 SPANISH 1 ...introduces language acquisition skills; basic pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar; reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities--basic verb tenses: present, present progressive, preterite and imperfect; cultural/geographical awareness (Spanish-speaking populations).

What will I learn?

  1. Analyze the process of language acquisition.
  2. Identify characters and symbols of written communication specific to target language.
  3. Discover general cultural similarities/differences between US and Spanish-speaking cultures/countries.
  4. Demonstrate appropriate use of pronouns.
  5. Demonstrate appropriate use of informal/formal forms of address.
  6. Identify vocabulary for common people, places, and things associated with the classroom, the family, clothing, the home, a calendar, food, a vacation, and pasttimes in target language.
  7. Identify gender as used in target language with regard to nouns (masculine/feminine).
  8. Identify number as used in target language with regard to nouns and adjectives.
  9. Demonstrate appropriate placement of target language adjectives.
  10. Conjugate regular -ar, -er, -ir verbs in simple tenses (present, present progressive, preterite, imperfect, and present perfect).
  11. Identify examples of and correct use of common idiomatic expressions.
  12. Demonstrate declension (appropriate verb ending for subject) of -ar, -er, and -ir verbs.
  13. Conjugate the 16 most common irregular verbs (caer, dar, decir, estar, hacer, ir, oir, poder, poner, querer, saber, ser, tener, traer, venir, and ver) in simple tenses (present, present progressive, preterite, imperfect, and present perfect) in target language.
  14. Construct basic sentences in target language.
  15. Initiate basic extemporaneous conversation in target language.
